Description
Republic of Cyprus Flag Mug
The flag of Cyprus consists of a yellow silhouette of the island and two crossed branches on a white background. The yellow color evokes the island’s copper resources, which is even reflected in the name “Cyprus” itself as it is derived from a Greek word for copper. The crisscrossing branches should represent the desire for peaceful coexistence between the Greek Cypriots and the Turks living on the island. Blue and red as the colors of the Greek and Cypriot flags are not intended to be used. The current flag was used in 1960 after independence from Britain and it was designed by a primary school teacher and endorsed by the first President of Cyprus. The flag may have been replaced in 2004, but the proposal was not passed in the referendum. Turkish Cypriots use their own flag, but it is not internationally recognized.
