The Finnish flag, also known as Siniristilippu (blue cross), is one of the Danneborg-inspired flags of Denmark. The blue Nordic cross reaches to the edges of the flag and rests on a white background. The shorter arm of the cross is moved closer to the left side of the flag, as with other Scandinavian flags, but the cross is larger than the others. The blue color represents the thousands of lakes in Finland and the white color represents the snow-white landscape. The cross is said to have its origins in ancient Norse legends, but the official Finnish version states that the cross was adopted after independence at the end of World War I. The national flag is only different from the national emblem placed in the center of the cross.
