The flag of the Federated States of Micronesia, adopted on 10 November 1979, consists of a pale blue plate on which four white five-pointed stars are placed. Since Micronesia is a group of islands located in the Pacific Ocean, the bright blue background represents the ocean surrounding the islands. The four main islands (and federal states) called Chuuk, Pohnpei, Yap and Kusrae are depicted through the stars. Originally, the flag of Micronesia had six stars, but after the Marshall Islands and Northern Mariana Islands left the Union, the two stars were dropped. Flags of a similar nature characterize the number of states in Oceania.
