The flag of Denmark, also known as Danneborg (“Danish cloth” in Danish), consists of a red background and a white cross extending to the edges of the flag. The vertical arm of the cross is modeled after another Scandinavian flag, so it is closer to the left side of the flag. According to legend, the flag was sent from heaven to help the Danish army on June 15, 1219 at the Battle of Lyndanise. King Valdemar II. would have almost lost the battle to the pagan Estonians, had it not been for a sign from heaven to give the army new energy to help them win the battle. The flag is also used in a slightly modified version as a naval flag – it is square in shape and has two small flags resembling a swallow’s tail.
