Dominica Flag Mug
The national flag, adopted in 1978, features the national bird symbol, the sisserou parrot (Amazona Imperialis), which also appears on the coat of arms issued on 21 July 1961. This parrot is endemic to Dominica. , is an endangered species with a population of only 250 to 350 individuals.
Lush green fields represent the island’s lush vegetation. The cross symbolizes the Trinity and Christianity, with the three colors representing the natives, the fertile land, and the pure water. The 10 blue five-pointed stars represent the country’s 10 parishes: (St Andrew, St David, St George, St John, St Joseph, St Luke, St Mark, St Patrick, St Paul and St Peter), while The red disc represents justice.
The sisserou parrot is sometimes blue or purple (the actual color of the parrot). The use of purple makes the flag of Dominica one of only two flags of sovereign states (along with the national flag of Nicaragua) to have this color.
The flag of Dominica, along with other national symbols, was the subject of the government-sponsored “Icon Week” in 2016. An initiative of the Independent Commission, Symbols Week aims to purpose of reflecting the meaning of national symbols and promoting their use among members of the general public and especially schools across the country.
