Dominican Republic Flag Mug
The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with the state of Haiti. The entire island was under Spanish rule until 1804, when the French established Haiti in the western third of the island. The Dominican Republic gained its independence in 1844. The flag of the Dominican Republic consists of a relatively large white cross that divides the flag into four sectors. The upper left field and the field along the diagonal are colored blue. The other two fields are red. In the center of the cross is a coat of arms, representing a shield supported by a palm tree and an olive branch bearing the inscription: “Dios, Patria, Liberta”, which translates as “God, fatherland, free”.
